Here are 10 questions to ask potential college roommates:
Make sure to answer the questions too so that they can know if you’re a good fit for them!
1. What is your daily schedule like?
Figure out when they wake up, go to class, study, and sleep, and see if this is compatible with your own schedule. This question is also useful if you are the type who needs personal space. It’s a great way to gauge when your roommate will be out or at home. If they tell you that they have a normal amount of classes, work, and extra curriculars, then it’s obvious that you will get some personal space throughout the day. However, if they come straight home after class and don’t have any other activities going on, you probably won’t be getting that alone time you need.
2. How do you wake up in the morning? How do you fall asleep at night?
If you’re a light sleeper, and they snooze their alarm every morning, it’s going to be a nightmare for you waking up to their alarm. On the flip side, if you’re a snoozer and they’re a light sleeper, be willing to figure out a way to avoid snoozing. Otherwise, move on to the next roommate candidate. Same concept applies for your bedtime routine.
3. What are your preferences with smoking, drinking, and throwing parties in our space?
You have the right to know your roommate’s lifestyle habits because it will affect you! If you’re not okay with their habits, be honest with them and see if they are willing to compromise.
4. Do you plan on having a significant other or guests come over or stay the night? If not, what would you hypothetically do in this case?
Even if your roommate does not have a current significant other, it’s important to ask what they would do in case they got one in the future. Do they plan on bringing them over all the time or even overnight? Let them know what you are most comfortable with. It’s okay if you are not comfortable with them being in your room because you’re not paying for a third roommate! It’s important to be transparent about this early on to avoid future conflict.
